Types of Bumper Cars

Ground-based Conductive Grid Bumper Cars
These bumper cars are directly connected to a conductive floor. They are robust and reliable, suitable for long-term operation, but require specific venue conditions, resulting in the highest installation cost among all types.

Ceiling-based Conductive Grid Bumper Cars
These bumper cars draw power from a conductive grid on the ceiling. This is the most common type, stable and reliable, with simple maintenance. However, their design is somewhat outdated compared to modern bumper cars, offering less flexibility and lower overall economic efficiency.

Battery-powered Bumper Cars
These bumper cars use rechargeable batteries, commonly lithium iron phosphate batteries. They have no specific venue requirements; only a safety barrier is needed, making them suitable for all types of amusement parks. They have the lowest installation cost and the highest economic efficiency.

The Structure of Bumper Cars

The bumper car is mainly composed of two parts:The vehicle and the site. The vehicle components include chassis, body, motor, battery (battery bumper car) or conductive device (grid bumper car), steering wheel, foot pedal (throttle and brake, some bumper cars do not have brakes), safety devices, etc. The chassis is usually made of steel, providing stable support for the vehicle.

The car body is mostly made of fiberglass material, which not only has a beautiful appearance, but also has a certain strength and toughness, and can provide cushioning and protection in the event of a collision. Electric motors are the power source of vehicles, converting electrical energy into mechanical energy to drive the vehicle.

The battery of the battery bumper car provides power to the motor, while the grid bumper car obtains electrical energy from the grid through conductive devices. The steering wheel is used to control the direction of the vehicle, while the foot pedal controls the speed of the vehicle. The safety devices include seat belts, safety bars, rubber aprons, etc. The seat belts and safety bars can fix passengers in their seats and prevent them from being thrown out of the vehicle during a collision; Rubber aprons are installed around the vehicle to cushion collision forces and reduce injuries to the vehicle and passengers.

In terms of venue, the power grid bumper car requires a dedicated indoor area with an electrified power grid on the ceiling and corresponding conductive facilities on the ground. The ground of the grounding collision car site needs to be paved with steel plates to construct a power supply network. However, battery powered bumper cars have relatively low requirements for the site, as long as there is a flat ground.

Basic Principles of Bumper Cars

Electric Power Source
Bumper cars rely on an electric power source to operate. Traditionally, older models of bumper cars were powered by a ceiling grid system. The car's pole, attached to the back, would contact a conductive ceiling to complete the electric circuit. This system would power the car, making it possible for drivers to move around and bump into each other. Modern bumper cars, however, often use a floor-based power system, where conductive plates or strips embedded in the floor transfer electricity to the car. Both systems ensure a continuous power supply to the cars while they move across the rink.

Steering and Movement
Bumper cars are designed for easy maneuverability, making them simple for riders to control. The car's steering wheel directs the movement by rotating the front wheels. Most bumper cars can move in any direction, allowing drivers to reverse or make sharp turns with ease. The cars are powered by a small electric motor, which propels them forward at a controlled speed.

Shock-Absorbing Bumpers
The name "bumper car" comes from the thick, shock-absorbing rubber bumpers surrounding each car. These bumpers are designed to minimize the impact during collisions, preventing injuries and damage. The energy-absorbing material ensures that even when two cars collide head-on, the force is dispersed evenly, resulting in a soft bounce rather than a dangerous crash.

Safety Features
While bumper cars are designed to provide thrilling collisions, several safety features are built into the design to protect riders. Besides the shock-absorbing bumpers, the cars have low speed limits and smooth acceleration to reduce the risk of injury.

Control System
The operation of bumper cars is managed by a centralized control system. This system allows the amusement park operators to control when the ride starts and stops. It also ensures all cars receive power simultaneously, so no car moves independently of the others. In some cases, operators can remotely stop cars in emergencies, adding another layer of safety. The control system also helps keep track of ride durations, ensuring everyone gets a fair amount of time to enjoy the experience.
